A Vegan Mom Inspiring Change

Meet registered nurse and vegan mom, Ashton! She has been vegan alongside her husband since 2018 and continues to make it her mission to inspire others to go plant-based as well. 

Ashton believes that the most effective way to persuade people to make the transition is by highlighting veganism in a positive way. She has shown those around her how much taking care of your body can enhance your overall life, and she provides the vegan community with as much support as possible by giving out free recipes, cookbooks and support. Throughout her vegan journey, she has helped 21 people fully transition to a plant-based lifestyle! 

The best tip that Ashton has for those looking to make the change is to make sure you are getting the proper nutrients. She does this by taking a B12 vitamin to reduce the chances of deficiency. Ashton and her husband decided to become vegan in 2018 to focus on bettering their health. Shortly after becoming vegan, they welcomed their first child together, Tom.

She feels good knowing that she is bettering her own health as well as prioritizing her family’s health. This decision has also allowed her to focus on other areas of her health such as exercise. Because she has more energy and feels better overall, she can spend more time playing sports with her family, which she absolutely loves! She also believes that switching to a vegan lifestyle has helped her maintain a healthy gut. Before becoming vegan, she suffered heavily with irritable bowel syndrome symptoms and says that now her symptoms have completely cleared. “It’s been life changing!”

We would like to introduce you to a vegan friend of ours who often gets funny looks when he tells people that he is vegan. And why is that? Because he has managed to maintain quite an impressive muscular physique on an entirely plant-based diet!

San Diego resident and realtor, Tomás addresses the common misconception that vegans have a particular “look” or can’t put on as much muscle as non-vegans. Tomás is living proof that this is not the case, and a great example of why you should never judge a book by its cover. 

Another misconception about the vegan community that Tomás has directly disproven is that vegans are unable to get proper protein in their diets. We think those muscles say otherwise and with the right food intake, all-natural supplements, and exercise, you can do it too! 

The Importance of Vegan Calcium

Tomás’ vegan journey began in August 2017 after he suffered from an injury that resulted in a broken arm. He learned about veganism through his doctor who advised him to get calcium from plants instead of drinking milk. His doctor said that doing so would help his bones remain nice and strong and provide him with a faster recovery time. 

His doctor estimated that his recovery would take about 8-10 weeks. However, by switching to a plant-based diet and obtaining calcium through plants, he was able to recover in only 5 weeks! Not just that, but he also had his blood work tested after those 5 weeks and his cholesterol had dropped from 240 to 170. Wow! 

This made Tomás even more intrigued by the vegan community, leading him to watch the popular vegan documentary, “What the Health?” He continued to educate himself on the vegan lifestyle and decided to make the switch permanent. This is where his vegan journey began, and once started, he never looked back. He says, “I feel at peace with my decision and I feel way more healthy and energetic.”

Vegan Advice

While Tomás says that he has yet to convince anyone to become 100% vegan, he has inspired his friends and family members to reduce their animal intake for the well-being of themselves as well as the world. 

His advice for those who want to change their lifestyle varies for each individual depending on what they wish to achieve in different aspects of their life. His number one piece of advice for most people is to start by replacing one non vegan meal with a vegan meal each day to help you slowly decrease your use of animal products. This is great advice for those who want to take things on the slower side. 

Lastly, Tomás says that while being vegan is the right thing to do, it is important to take time to relax and enjoy yourself. Never be too hard on yourself if you slip up along the way and always make time to do the things you love! For Tomás, these things include exercising, traveling, hiking, and spending time with his wife. Lucky for him, she’s vegan too!

Everyone’s vegan journey is different in some way and at Vegan life Nutrition, we aim to help make the process of adapting to a vegan lifestyle easier as well as help long time vegans throughout their journey.

While San Diego is one of the best places to enjoy life as a vegan, many of our vegan journey friends come from places that don’t offer as many vegan options as lovely California does.

Our friend Darja Smirnova is originally from Lithuania, but has traveled all over the world and experienced vegan cuisine in many different places. Aside from California, Darja has also been fortunate enough to explore the vegan lifestyle in Bali and Indonesia. 

Being Vegan in Bali

Bali has a lot to offer when it comes to food options, with a large focus on health and wellness. For starters, it is home to traditional cuisine that is extremely vegan-friendly on its own with many of the restaurants offering delicious vegan options. In fact, both tofu and tempeh are used frequently in local dishes. It’s considered by many to be one of the best places to eat on a vegan diet!

Being in a place where health and wellness is heavily prioritized has allowed Darja to not only experiment with new vegan foods, but has also helped her expand her horizons in certain areas of exercise, specifically yoga. Darja is a trained and certified yoga teacher (RYT® 200), aerial yoga teacher, and Himalayan Kriya yoga teacher. Darja credits her vegan lifestyle, exercise routine, meditations, and breathwork for helping her in all aspects of her life.  

She says, “Yoga, Meditations, Kriya, Breathwork help us to bring this connection to the true self. And you can experience this connection at any moment by being present in the here and now.” 

Darja is also a certified nutritionist and says that switching to a vegan lifestyle has not only changed her diet, but her entire personality. Her mood and outlook on life is more positive and she simply feels better. 

Favorite Vegan Foods

In order to maintain a healthy vegan lifestyle, Darja makes sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day, as well as beans, nuts, and seeds. Eating a variety of these foods provides her with a wide range of important vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and protein. One of the fruits she consumes on a regular basis that is unique to Asia is durian — a unique tropical fruit that is strong in smell, but incredibly nutritious and delicious. 

Darja says that although she couldn’t eat it at first due to its strong smell that comes from the presence of volatile sulfur compounds and fatty acids, she has grown to love it and says that Bali does it best. Some of the health benefits of durian are improved mood, treatment of sexual dysfunction, better sleep, help with skin pigmentation, wrinkles and aging, healthy bones, nergy boost, and regulation of blood preseure and prevention of cardiovasclar disaese. 

Another treat that Darja has incorporated into her everyday routine is consuming celery juice at the start of her day. She began noticing the many benefits of consuming celery juice just after a few days, such as clearer skin, improved digestion, less bloating, sustained energy, better mental clarity, weight loss, and a more stable mood.

Advice From Vegan to Vegan

As a nutritionist and friend to the vegan community, Darja’s advice to others who are looking to become vegan is to remember that “food is energy” and that it’s up to us what kind of energy we want to put into our bodies. The more alive and fresh the energy is, the better it is to consume and the higher the impact it has on our physical body and energy levels. 

Her advice is simple, “If it grows – eat it, if it does not grow – don’t eat it.” She says that learning to eat in a healthy manner will have your body thanking you. 

Last but not least, Darja advises her fellow vegans to say yes more often! “When you say ‘yes’, when you are carefree because you trust that the universe is working in harmony with you, you attract even more yeses, more joy, more generosity, more abundance.” So say yes to traveling the world, say yes to only putting good ingredients into your body, and say yes to going vegan! “It’s never too late to go vegan! You can start today!”

Whether you started your vegan journey many years ago or are just getting started, Vegan Life Nutrition aims to provide the entire vegan community with plant-based products to support your plant-based lifestyle. 

Each vegan we’ve met has a unique story and piece of advice for navigating different stages of the journey. Ava is just one of our many Vegan Journey friends that is helping make a big difference in the world.

Ava decided to go vegan quite recently, on May 17th, 2021. She had been vegetarian for 10 years, but after watching the documentary, ‘What The Health’ on Netflix, she decided to go vegan the very next day. Now, she continues to watch health-related documentaries that confirm to her that going vegan was one of the best decisions she has made, both for her world and for her individual health. 

Inspiring Others

One of Ava’s biggest motivators is being able to set a good example for those around her. She strives to be a good role model and hopes to inspire others to become vegan by continuing to shine a positive light on veganism. Although her friends and family members are not vegan, they are all very supportive of her lifestyle and have often expressed genuine interest in adopting the lifestyle themselves.

When going to parties or out with non-vegan friends and family members, she says it can often be difficult to find vegan options on a non-vegan menu, but she always makes it work. Sometimes it just takes having a good understanding of which vegan foods work best for your body so you are able to come up with something on your own.

However, Ava is not alone on her vegan journey! She is usually accompanied on romantic vegan dates with her boyfriend who also became vegan, which has helped him reach a healthy weight. Even his friends are noticing the change and asking both of them for advice now.

Good Advice

While Ava is a newer member of the vegan community, she has definitely made it past the bumpiest parts. Her advice to those who are looking to switch to veganism is fresh from her recent personal experience. She advises others to take the process in small steps by taking one non-vegan product out of their everyday cooking each month. This is a great way to switch diets without having to completely change what you’ve been used to in just a single day. Baby steps! 

She also says that for anyone who is worried about missing non-vegan foods, “being vegan doesn’t have to be boring!” It’s very easy to take your favorite dish and make it vegan, you just need to be open-minded and willing to try new things. “We don’t just eat lettuce!” Take that lettuce and spice it up by creating a delicious vegan taco, which is one of Ava’s favorite vegan dishes.

A common misconception that many people have about vegans is that they lack proper nutrition and that they are unable to get proper nutrients from a plant-based diet. However, this is not true as long as you are knowledgeable in which  vegan foods provide your body with the nutrients you need. 

If you find that you are struggling to maintain a healthy intake of nutrients in your diet, vegan supplements are a great way to ensure you get the recommended daily amount of each essential vitamin. Ava stresses the importance of implementing supplements into your daily routine that are most suitable for your lifestyle.

Although veganism has seen an explosion in support over the last few years, the community was still in its budding stages in the early 2010s. Nearly 10 years later in 2019,after being declared the “year of the vegan,” more and more people are making this commitment to their day-to-day health and lifestyle. However some long-time vegans began their journey long before it launched into the mainstream, such as Sonya McDaniel-Goodwin of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sonya is a natural green thumb. She loves growing her own food, researching holistic medicine, and introducing others to the vegan journey through delicious recipes and tips. For those interested in veganism, Sonya suggests keeping it simple. Replacing meat with two vegetables that you like, for example, connecting with the broader vegan community on social media, and remaining open to new types of foods are her main tips. 

A vegan journey lasting over a decade

Sonya started her vegan journey nearly 11 years ago in March of 2011 with the “30 Daniel Fast.” Since noticing the significant health benefits, Sonya has kept on with her vegan lifestyle. The Daniel Fast is a partial fast, allowing for some eating – it’s the food groups involved that distinguish it. Whole grains, beans, legumes, vegetables, seeds, fruits, and nuts are all allowed, while animal products such as fish, meat, eggs, and dairy are prohibited. Other restricted items include caffeine, any artificial sweeteners, yeast, deep-fried meals, and processed foods. 

Around a year ago, shortly after starting her vegan journey, Sonya was diagnosed with Lupus. However her diagnosis didn’t keep her from tending to work, personal projects, and her social life. She credits clean, plant-based eating for her newfound health in the face of Lupus, which speaks on how veganism ultimately puts us in greater harmony with our bodies.

A vegan journey to share with the family

Although she’s the only vegan in her home, Sonya’s dishes are a hit with the family. She admits that it’s been her toughest challenge in continuing on with the vegan journey, as she has little support to remain vegan. However, being the foodie she is, Sonya puts her own spin on family dinners. 

The McDaniel-Goodwin dinner menu is diverse and multicultural, full of dishes from around the world. It can be easy to forget that veganism doesn’t necessitate bland meals or an absence of fun, as many people assume. With the right combination of ingredients, flavors, and spices, vegan dishes can be just as delicious as any traditional meal. 

Looking at Sonya’s journey, it’s evident that the vegan lifestyle not only keeps us in tune with our bodies, but is able to taste just as good as the traditional meals many are used to.

Empowering Lifestyle

Isbah is a 23-year-old Kashmiri-Pakistani who grew up in Houston. Today, she spends her time as a teacher and an explorer, which has helped push her to experience new things and inspire others in the vegan community. 

She became vegan in March of 2015 after witnessing the injustice brought upon animals and decided to make the change. Isbah says, “Embracing my vegan lifestyle is truly one of the most empowering aspects of my life.” 

She feels better physically and morally, which has given her a sense of empowerment and inspired her to live life to the fullest. Isbah is big on adventure and says that she feels the most relaxed when she is outdoors and can explore her surroundings.

Being vegan doesn’t stop her from living her best life. While many people believe that living a vegan lifestyle is difficult due to certain limitations, Isbah says that  veganism has given her the opportunity to venture into new types of foods, some she previously had never heard of. “From fruits and lentils to vegetables around the world, vegan foods are abundant everywhere.”

Vegan adventure

The best way that Isbah helps both her students and others in the vegan community is by leading by example. In her experience, she feels that she has encouraged people around her to be more vegan-friendly by continuously embracing the vegan lifestyle and everything that it has to offer. It’s about showing people that being vegan is not about limiting yourself but about enjoying life at a greater capacity. 

When you have more energy, and you feel better physically, you are able to live your life to the absolute fullest. Isbah also strives to make it an ongoing effort to introduce people around her to all that the vegan community has to offer, such as new vegan restaurants and products. Experiencing new places and new foods is an exciting part of life and this is how she chooses to view her vegan journey: as an adventure! 

Baby steps

She says, “The best advice that I can give to anyone curious about going vegan is to celebrate all of your accomplishments, even minor ones, and to not let your setbacks discourage you.” 

One tip she has for those who are struggling to maintain a vegan diet is to start off by implementing vegan products into your life or supporting vegan businesses. This is a great way to meet other vegans in the community to inspire you and to gain new information. “There is much more to embracing a vegan lifestyle than a vegan diet; try every aspect.”

We would like to introduce you to someone who has been a big inspiration to the vegan community.

Stefanie Stevens just moved to Denver from Los Angeles and originally grew up in Ohio. As many of us know, being vegan is different for everyone, especially based on where you live. Some locations do not offer nearly as many vegan options as others. For instance, we are sure that the vegan choices are quite different in Ohio compared to Los Angeles. Stefanie shows her followers just how to navigate life as a vegan through her vegan brand, ‘Life Veganized.’ She enjoys sharing vegan recipes, recommendations, tips and advice with other vegans and those who wish to become vegan.

Becoming ‘Life Veganized’

Stefanie began her vegan journey in 2009 after being vegetarian for a year and a half. Eating animals never felt right to her, morally or nutritionally. In the beginning, she didn’t understand why veganism would be necessary. She became more aware of the animal agriculture industry and decided to make the transition to veganism. 

Being vegan is more than just a diet for Stefanie; it is a lifestyle. Stefanie helps the vegan community through her belief in leading by example. She started Life Veganized as a result of her friends, coworkers and family members’ consistent questions and interests over veganism. 

She wondered how many other people that she didn’t know who were feeling the same way and felt compelled to share her knowledge and guidance. She now has connections with people from all over the world. Whether it be with simple questions or taking on nutrition clients, she is always there to help. 

Reaping the Rewards

When we asked Stefanie how it feels to be vegan, she said, “It feels amazing! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I even have a vegan tattoo. There’s no way I’ll ever go back!” 

Now, this is what we call dedication! 

She says living vegan is not a challenge once you have mastered the art of it. She reassures those who are just beginning their journey that it gets easier along the way. 

Stef says, “It’s the most rewarding thing I do regularly, and I tell other vegans this as well – no matter what kind of day you’re having, you are making the world a better place every day just by continuing to be vegan.”

Stef Shares Tips

Although Stef believes being vegan is easy once you get into the swing of things, she still faces occasional challenges.

The biggest piece of advice that she has for those who are just starting off on their journey is not to worry about the opinions of others who may not be supportive of your decision to go vegan. 

She says, “Your vegan life is what you make it. It helps that society, in general, is way more accepting of veganism than it was when I first went vegan, but also, the way you demonstrate your veganism really affects how others perceive it a lot of the time.” 

Her best piece of advice: “If you come across any challenges, don’t give in to them. Act as if being vegan is not difficult, and you will be successful in your journey. Life is 10% what is thrown at us and 90% how we react. If you’re sulking at a family get-together because no one made you a vegan option, it could seem that veganism is restrictive and miserable. But if you bring a delicious vegan dish, and/or confidently, respectfully, and simply say “no, thank you” to the non-vegan options, it is more likely to seem that veganism isn’t very difficult at all.”

Vegan Go-Tos

Stef’s favorite vegan food is pizza! Now that’s what we are talking about! Who doesn’t love pizza? Of course, because she can’t have pizza every night of the week, she also gave us a second answer and said that she’s been really loving quinoa bowls recently as they are a nice warm comfort food, and she can switch them up with different choices of proteins, veggies and sauces. For snacks, we were impressed to hear that she enjoys making cheese sauces out of cashews for nachos and such. 

Although Stefanie is able to maintain a very nutrient-dense diet with foods that are rich in B12, she has found that taking a B12 supplement helps support a healthy vegan lifestyle. Stef says, “Supplements can be a great addition to a vegan diet though, for those who need or want it!”

As we have discovered from our many vegan journey submissions, a lot of people chose to go vegan for the overall health benefits. 

Studies have shown that living a vegan lifestyle can be linked to overall better health in general as vegan diets tend to be rich in nutrients and low in saturated fats.

We’d like to introduce you to someone who takes their health very seriously and aims to better her health through plant-based eating. Julie Graham, also known as “Juju”, was born and raised in Illinois, but has plans to make her way to California. As California locals, we plan to welcome her and her family with open arms! 

Julie became vegan 6 years ago in November. She decided to make the decision due to her family’s history of heart disease and cancer. After discovering the health benefits of living a plant-based lifestyle, such as better heart health and lower risk of cancer, she made the change overnight.  

Since becoming vegan, Julie says that she feels like the very best version of herself! “I absolutely love being vegan.” Not only does she feel better physically and mentally, but she says that she is happier with her food choices as she is able to add a bit more variety to her plate while not feeling guilty for overindulging. She says, “I have never been healthier or more fit! This is a lifelong journey and I wish I would have started it so much earlier.”

The Importance of Family Time

Although Julie says that one of the most difficult things about being vegan is finding friends that share the same interests, she has had zero problems convincing her family members to go vegan. Julie is a mother of 3 and everyone in her immediate family including her mom live a plant based lifestyle. That must make family events very fun and easy! 

In their freetime, she and her family enjoy getting outside and traveling to new places. Spending time in the fresh air by going for walks and runs allows her to better both her physical and mental health, and she often encourages her family to do the same.

Friendly Advice from Julie

If you are interested in trying out a vegan lifestyle and are not sure where to start, Julie says not to be fearful of trying something new, especially because it is not as difficult as it seems! There are so many vegan resources out there that can help you through your transition and so many helpful vegan mentors within the community, just like Julie.

Each vegan journey is different – there are many different approaches that people take in terms of encouraging others to try living a vegan lifestyle. While some are rather intense with how they attempt to persuade others, Holly believes a more easy-going approach makes newcomers feel more welcome and less intimidated. 

Worried about missing meat?

Holly was vegetarian for 6 years before finally deciding to go vegan after meeting her boyfriend. Although at first she was a bit scared to make the transition, she soon realized just how easy making the switch actually was as there are so many wonderful vegan options available. Holly admits that while she is often tempted by the smell of steak every now and then, being vegan is worth it for the sake of animals. To anybody out there looking to go vegan and worried about missing meat, Holly says that there are plenty of delicious substitutes.

Gentle Approach

While we love our passionate friends who go all-in with persuading others to go vegan, sometimes taking a more gentle approach is the way to go with newer vegans. Going vegan isn’t easy for everyone and the first steps are definitely the hardest. 

Holly’s goal is to inspire others to make the lifestyle change because she believes it is the best option, but she aims to do so in a way that isn’t too pushy. She says, “I would never want to push my beliefs onto people, but I want to encourage others to go vegan by sharing helpful knowledge and tasty recipes!”  We think this is a great way to get people interested.

Change is happening

With the help of members of the vegan community such as Holly who are dedicated to making positive change in the world, the vegan industry is definitely growing. Holly says that, “while it may seem a bit scary at first to cut non-vegan products out of your diet, new and exciting vegan products are constantly being added to stores which makes it all seem much less terrifying.”  She says she feels so much happier exploring the vegan sections of grocery stores as they get bigger every day with new vegan foods and supplements to help you throughout your journey.

We are always inspired by our vegan friends who work towards bettering all aspects ofLauryn their lives on top of improving their nutrition.

We’d like to introduce you to someone who does a little bit of everything in her vegan journey to ensure proper mental, physical and nutritional health. Meet plant-based nutritionist, mental health therapist, yoga teacher, activist, content creator and mother, Lauryn, whose life is anything but simple.

She does it all!

We were inspired by Lauryn after we discovered her informative (and funny) Instagram videos on Instagram. We were amazed by her ability to find a balance between work and fun, and we applaud her for always being so positive. Lauryn uses Instagram to educate other vegans and non-vegans about the benefits of going plant-based through videos as well as hosting Zoom presentations. In one of her most recent presentations, she discussed the benefits of eating plant-based for good mental, emotional and physical health. Lauryn says, “Our food choices have a profound effect on how we feel not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and psychologically as well. Studies have shown a plant-based diet can positively impact feelings of anxiety, depression and fatigue.” 

By posting recipes on her Instagram account and providing others with nutritional advice, she is able to show that living a vegan lifestyle is attainable and desirable. To Lauryn, food consumption is a very crucial part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She says, “Food is the consumption of calories into energy, no matter how you look at it.” 

Lauryn’s goal is to change the way that we look at food consumption because “as a human race, we need to change that. Our survival depends on it.” She has many favorite vegan dishes, but her favorite is mac and cheese; she assures us that she can make a mean mac and cheese, and we believe it! Her number one snack tip is dates stuffed with nut butter and vegan chocolate chips. 

We are going to be sure to give that one a try as soon as possible.

Mom Life

Lauryn switched to a vegan lifestyle after experiencing aches and pains throughout her body. Her husband was also having high blood pressure, high cholesterol & was pre-diabetic. The two decided to make the change together. After switching to a vegan diet, they both noticed a huge shift in their health. Lauryn’s aches and pains were gone, and all of her husband’s bloodwork came back in range, showing that he is in better health.

Lauryn’s children were a major reason why she decided to actively begin avoiding foods containing animal byproducts. She said that she continued to see studies about the benefits of being vegan for the planet. “I feel the need to fight every single day to make change for a viable future for my boys.” 

She loved her dramatic health change, and she celebrated it by pursuing her certification in plant-based nutrition.

Because Lauryn is the chef in her household, her husband and kids also live a vegan lifestyle. She jokingly told Vegan Life Nutrition, “They have no choice because I’m the cook!” 

The whole family enjoys eating vegan, and they all love the way they feel after they eat. Her husband also always goes back for second helpings! She said that sometimes it’s hard at school for her children because she can not be there to monitor what they eat; she always makes sure to send them with their own snacks and treats. Lauryn is also a nursing vegan mother and says that the baby is easy because he has never had exposure to meat, dairy or eggs. 

Last words of wisdom

Like most of our other vegan friends, Lauryn’s only regret is that she wishes she had learned what she knows now sooner in her life. She does not beat herself up over having become vegan later in adulthood, and she tries to let go of the decisions she made in the past. That’s what your vegan journey is all about: growth! She says, “how we live each day when we know better is what really matters.”  

Two things that Lauryn wishes that her fellow vegan friends had better knowledge of are finding more vegan friends and the importance of B12 supplements, which she believes that every vegan should be taking.
