Vegan Prenatal VitaminsOne of the most important things you can do if you are pregnant or trying to conceive is to start taking supplements packed with essential vitamins and minerals to support yours and the baby’s health. This is particularly true of mothers who follow a vegan lifestyle, which is why we developed 100% vegan prenatal vitaminsShop here.

Why Take Vegan Prenatal Vitamins?

When you become pregnant, your nutritional needs change. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a daily prenatal vitamin is the best way to fill any gaps that you may have in your diet. While most vegans are very conscious about what they eat, it’s easy to miss out on some vital nutrients when relying on diet alone. You aren’t just eating for two when you’re pregnant, you’re eating to replenish the resources that your baby depletes as they are developing. Vegan prenatal vitamins are an easy way to support you and your baby no matter your diet or lifestyle.

If you have had children before, you know that after birth, a woman’s body is still going through major changes for the weeks and months that follow. With all the changes in your life and a new, somewhat non-existent sleep schedule, your body may not be getting the nutrients you and – if you breastfeed your baby- the nutrients your baby needs. Taking a vegan postnatal supplement can help ensure you are getting the optimal daily vitamins and minerals both you and your newborn need.vegan postnatal supplement

Here at Vegan Life Nutrition, we have developed a 100% vegan postnatal supplements designed to provide the essential vitamins and nutrients that vegan mothers need to maintain their natural systems after birth.

Why Take Postnatal Supplements?

According to Healthline, “Pregnancy depletes several nutrients in your body, including folate, vitamin D, iron, fatty acids, selenium, and calcium, so optimal nutrition after delivery is important.”

One of the best ways to support your body and your newborn’s development is to make sure you are integrating the various nutrients and vitamins that your body depleted during pregnancy into your daily diet. It’s incredibly difficult to accomplish this by food alone, especially for vegan women where nutrient sources are limited, so a supplement is ideal.

For breastfeeding moms, postnatal supplements can also help maintain healthy digestion and promote healthy cell division and development for the newborn.

Many plant-based moms struggle to find a vegan postnatal supplement that they can trust is truly 100% vegan, all-natural, non-GMO, and gluten-free. Vegan Life Nutrition saw the need for such a supplement and put together an all-in-one supplement built just for your postnatal needs.

What to Look For in a Vegan Postnatal Supplement

Healthline explains that “ a good postnatal supplement should contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, such as folate, choline, iron, selenium, and vitamins A, B6, B12, and D.”

A postnatal supplement should also include essential nutrients such as:

  • Riboflavin (riboflavin sodium phosphate)
  • Niacin (niacinamide)
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate)
  • Folate ((6s)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid, glucosamine salt)
  • Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)
  • Biotin (d-biotin)

These ingredients work together to support the health of the mom and baby that practice veganism.

Vegan Life Nutrition’s Postnatal Focus Bundle Contains All of the Above!

During the development of our Pre and Postnatal supplement, we knew that we needed to offer more than just the basics. We wanted to make sure that we incorporated all of the most beneficial vitamins to support postnatal care specifically.

That’s why we developed a Postnatal Focus Bundle that incorporates essential vitamins and nutrients like Vitamin D, Thiamine,  Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, and Choline, and many more to support the health of both mother and newborn.

To learn more about how these supplements support your body, check out our blog post about vegan Prenatal and Postnatal Supplements.

Vitamins and supplements play a major role in our everyday lives. Those who abide by a vegan lifestyle know that it’s crucial to incorporate extra nutrients into their daily routine to maintain healthy function of their bodies. Getting these nutrients is arguably even more important for vegan women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Here at Vegan Life Nutrition, we are preparing to launch our new line of vegan prenatal supplements and postnatal supplements to support the overall health of mothers and their babies. vegan prenatal supplements

It’s important to understand which extra nutrients both mom and baby can benefit from as this transition takes place and why they need to be taken consistently.

Why Take Prenatal Supplements?

It can be difficult to find truly vegan supplements and it may not seem like a big deal if you skip out on a few extra steps in your vitamin routine. However, when taking prenatal supplements, consistency is important.

Our prenatal supplements work to support the body in the following ways:

  • Provide essential vitamins for mother and baby.
  • Maintain healthy digestion.
  • Promote healthy cell division and development.
  • Support the fetal brain, spinal cord, heart, muscle, bone, nerve, and skin development.
  • Support placenta growth.
  • Promote red blood cell development.

They are called “prenatal supplements” because they help prepare both the mother’s body and the fetus for a healthy pregnancy. According to The Natalist, ““If you start taking a daily prenatal vitamin before pregnancy, you can set this proverbial nutritional safety net firmly in place, thereby giving yourself and your future baby the best chance of reaping as many benefits as possible.” The extra nutrients will allow optimal conditions and developmental support.

What to Look For in a Vegan Prenatal Supplement.

Our vegan prenatal supplements are 100% plant-based and full of the key vitamins to help  pregnant women sustain healthy nutrient levels during pregnancy.

Some of the key vitamins that you should be on the look out for are:

  • Calcium (calcium carbonate, plant-derived)
  • Iron (ferrous bisglycinate chelate)
  • Iodine (kelp, laminaria digitata)
  • Vitamin B12
  • Manganese (manganese bisglycinatechelate)
  • Chromium (chromium nicotinate glycinate chelate)

Vegan Life Nutrition’s Prenatal / Postnatal Basic vitamins contain all of these nutrients and more to support you before, during, and after pregnancy – encapsulated in pill form for easy digestion.

Vegan Life Nutrition Prenatal Focus Bundle.

In addition to the Prenatal / Postnatal Basic Supplement, we will be offering a Prenatal Focus Bundle to provide extra prenatal-centric nutrients like 550mgs of Choline per serving for optimal fetal care.

These 100% vegan supplements provide essential vitamins and minerals to women who are either pregnant or trying to conceive to support the mother’s health as well as fetal development.

Our new products will launch September 1, 2022 and will be non-GMO, certified gluten-free, cruelty-free, and contain no artificial colors.

Becoming a mother is an exciting time for everyone who gets to experience the joy of having a baby. Each and every pregnancy is different and all moms face varying challenges as they progress in their pregnancy and even after birth. As a vegan mom, you may face some challenges that non-vegan moms might not, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a healthy pregnancy. vegan moms

Here at Vegan Life Nutrition, we know that living a vegan lifestyle is important to you and you don’t want to compromise that when you’re pregnant. We have gathered some tips for you to consider as you go through pregnancy as a vegan mom.

Find a Doctor with Vegan Experience

Whether you are choosing to go with a doctor, midwife, doula, etc, to assist you through your pregnancy, we highly recommend you connect with someone who has helped vegan moms before. They will be prepared to answer your questions and keep you informed on how you can maintain a healthy and nutritious vegan lifestyle throughout your pregnancy. They will also be able to determine how you need to adjust your vitamin and nutrient intake while pregnant.

Listen to Your Body

The cool thing about being a human is that we have instincts. We can tell when we are hungry, thirsty, and need a nap. Our body will also often give us signals when we are lacking vital nutrients that keep us functional. When you are pregnant, it’s very important to listen to what your body is telling you in order to protect yourself and your baby. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s likely that you need extra support.

Here are some indicators that you may be low on nutrients during pregnancy:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Abnormal sensitivity to cold
  • Fatigue

These could be indications of deficiencies in Iron, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and several others. If any of these present consistently during your pregnancy, consult your doctor.

Monitor Your Nutrients

You can avoid major deficiencies with your nutrients by keeping an eye on your nutritional levels and adjusting your diet and supplement intake. During any pregnancy, but specifically a vegan pregnancy, it’s vital to make sure you are getting enough iron, calcium, iron, potassium, iodine, and vitamin B12. You can learn more about how to build your diet from this article from What To Expect.

This summer, Vegan Life Nutrition is excited to help provide the vitamins and supplements necessary for a healthy pregnancy with our upcoming 100% vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free Prenatal and Postnatal vitamins. We created this line of support for vegan moms and their babies so they don’t have to worry about compromising their dietary restrictions and beliefs in order to get the nutrients they need. Most vegans share a common desire for a better world, which includes protecting the rights of animals and taking care of their bodies. San Diego-based vegan, Mychael Mcneely, is someone whose deep-rooted passion for building a vegan world is elevated by his actions.  Vegan Life Nutrition would like to introduce you to Mychael.

Mychael’s Vegan Journey

“It feels wonderful to be vegan,” says Mychael, “It’s like my heart, mind, and actions are aligned. It feels like coming home.”

Mychael went vegan in August of 2012 and just recently celebrated his 9th vegan anniversary. Mychael chose to become vegan because any alternative choice did not seem ethical, compassionate, or necessary.

His vegan journey is one that truly feels meant to be. He feels strongly about living a life that protects animals and betters the world. He says that his ethical mindset matches his actions, and each day he works towards improving the planet.

Lending a Helping Hand

Mychael helps out the vegan community by asking questions that allow individuals to make the decision to become vegan on their own. He is not forceful with his efforts or aggressive and instead, approaches people with kindness and in a way that is truly helpful for them.

Although he aims for a world where everyone is vegan, Mychael believes that they should decide for themselves that veganism is the way to go.

It’s less about doing it because it’s right and everyone else is doing it and much more about doing it because it makes your heart happy. He also highly encourages others to become vegan and welcomes them into the community with open arms and heaps of helpful knowledge. Mychael’s wisdom and vast knowledge of the topic of being vegan make him a great source of information.

Mychael is well known within the local San Diego community of vegans and is constantly providing other vegans with helpful answers to questions they may have. Because he is an expert in horticulture, his knowledge of fruits and veggies definitely comes in handy within the vegan community. In his free time, Mychael makes it a mission to volunteer at animal sanctuaries as much as possible. Doing so not only lowers the consumption and exploitation of animals but also allows him to gain new information that he is able to share with other vegans.

Being Vegan

Mychael has been married to his wife for 14 years and has a son who lives with them. Together they live in a vegan household and make conscious choices. He says that he does not force his son to be vegan; however,  when he is able to make his own food choices, he usually opts for vegan options. Mychael says that the biggest misconception about being vegan is that the food is limited.

“Being vegan has opened me up to new foods, new ways of seeing things, and compassion/empathy that were blocked before. It is not restrictive, but rather, expansive.”

His favorite vegan food is vegan bowls, full of his favorite veggies, fruits, grains, etc, because of how easy they are to get the nutrients you need and that they are customizable! You can have bowls for any meal of the day; Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert! Although Mychael is able to get all of his required nutrients through plant-based meals, he takes B12 and vitamin D supplements for added assurance.

Mychael’s passion for bettering the world stems from his realization that the world is struggling. He says that the biggest challenge he faces as a vegan is witnessing the immense suffering in the world and realizing that most humans willingly continue to contribute to it.

He wants to do better not just for his community but for the world. Mychael continues to encourage others to become vegan by suggesting that they start with a vegan challenge! “There are so many out there, and you will be very surprised about just how great it feels.” You may even turn a challenge into a life-long vegan journey.

Vegan Life Nutrition is proud to be a part of so many vegan journeys.  We don’t sacrifice quality for innovation. Our products are always free of toxins, allergens, and unnecessary ingredients. How? We strictly examine raw ingredients and fully-vet each final product. Quality is our top consideration, and we adhere to the guidelines of some of the toughest regulatory authorities in the world.

concerned about varicose veinsAccording to the American College of Phlebology, up to 50 percent of American women have varicose veins at some point in their lives. Should this many women be concerned about varicose veins?

It’s common for these blue and violet lines to start appearing on our legs as we age, especially after pregnancy or weight gain. These varicose veins are superficial veins that have become enlarged, stretched, and damaged over time.

You may have also referred to these noticeable lines as spider veins — a form of varicose veins that appear closer to the surface of the skin, with smaller red and blue lines branching out in a spidery/web-like array.

Most women find their varicose and spider veins to be more of a cosmetic annoyance or insecurity, but it’s also common for women to report tenderness and discomfort in their legs as these veins become more prominent. When this is the case, it’s important to be aware of warning signs that may warrant a call to your doctor.

When Should You Be Concerned About Varicose Veins?

Here are some warning signs:

  • Abnormal swelling in the legs
  • Consistent pain in the legs and feet
  • “Heavy legs” sensation after walking or other physical activity
  • Inflamed or discolored skin around the varicose veins
  • Worsening symptoms and pain
  • Development of skin ulcers on the legs

If any of these symptoms occur, it’s important that you contact your doctor immediately as there could be serious causes and repercussions if untreated.

How Can I Get Rid Of My Varicose Veins?

If your varicose veins are not resulting in any pain and are merely a cosmetic concern, you have a few options for reducing their appearance.

While there are multiple treatments to get rid of varicose and spider veins, such as laser therapy, radiofrequency ablation, and surgery to remove or close the veins, these options can be incredibly expensive, painful, and invasive.

If you are looking for a non-invasive solution to varicose and spider veins, we might have the perfect product for you!

Diosmin95

In 2021, Vegan Life Nutrition launched Diosmin95 — an all-natural, vegan supplement designed to help reduce the appearance of varicose veins and promote improved circulation throughout the body.

The 95% Diosmin used in this product is the highest available in the commercial markets.

Diosmin is a venoactive ingredient, which simply means it is known to affect symptoms related to venous diseases and abnormalities. By helping to improve circulation, promoting the elasticity of blood vessels, strengthening veins, reducing inflammation, and supporting lymphatic drainage, this compound has been used for decades to reduce the appearance of spider and varicose veins and minimize swelling in the body, primarily in the legs.

Diosmin95As we discussed in a recent blog, it’s very common for women to develop varicose and spider veins in their legs as they age. Whether the veins are a cause of physical pain, insecurity, or both, they are a grievance to women all over the world. While some women turn to surgery or laser therapy to remove/treat these veins, these processes can be incredibly invasive, painful, and expensive.

If you haven’t yet developed these dark blue and purple protruding veins on your legs or they aren’t yet noticeable to others, this article is for you. There are a few ways you can prevent varicose veins and spider veins from appearing or getting worse.

Here are our tips.

Give Your Legs and Feet Some Time Off

If your career or hobbies require you to stand or sit for a long time, you are at a greater risk for developing varicose and spider veins. Throughout your day, try to find a few minutes to relieve the pressure off your legs and feet by propping them up or walking around. Even brief sessions of movement allow your leg muscles to better assist your veins in pushing blood towards your heart, improving your circulation. Elevating your feet up onto a stool or chair periodically will alleviate much of the gravitational pressure, reducing ankle swelling.

Exercise Regularly

Low-intensity exercises like walking, swimming, and yoga are all great for stretching your leg muscles, improving circulation, and alleviating pressure in your legs. You can do these exercises proactively to prevent varicose veins and spider veins, as well as in an effort to prevent worsening existing varicose and spider veins.

Wear Compression Hose

Sometimes, adding external pressure to your legs and ankles can help keep your veins in line, helping them work properly and with less strain.

You can find many different brands of compression socks/stockings over-the-counter or prescribed by your doctor. Most women who wear compression socks and stockings do so to alleviate pain in their legs due to existing varicose and spider veins, but they can also be used as a preventative measure. If you decide to use compression gear to prevent varicose veins in your legs, consult your physician to determine the right level of firmness for you.

Take Supplements

If you are looking for a non-invasive solution to varicose and spider veins, we might have the perfect product for you!

varicose veins

As we age, it’s common for blue and violet lines to start appearing on our legs. These lines are caused by varicose veins, which are superficial veins that have become enlarged, stretched, and damaged over time.

Causes of Varicose Veins

While you may have developed or noticed spider veins on your face, the most common placements for spider and varicose veins are the legs.

The primary cause of varicose veins is an increase of pressure and strain on circulation, largely due to the stress on your legs from running, walking, crossing your legs while sitting, and even just standing. As years go by, the ramifications of this pressure start to take a toll on your veins as they work overtime to keep your blood flowing from your legs and feet back to your heart. This essentially means that your veins are working against gravity any time you are standing to continue your circulation from the lower half of your body back to your chest

As this blood is pushed towards your heart, your veins use small valves to close behind the blood to prevent any backward/downwards flow. However, if the pressure on these valves has become too great over time to the point where they are too weak to function properly, excess blood can start to gather in the vein, causing the elastic vein to stretch and expand. This is what causes the spider and varicose vein appearance.

Who Is At Risk for Varicose Veins?

The most common demographic of people who develop spider veins and varicose veins are older and/or pregnant women. However, there is a genetic factor at play — if your mother and other women in your family had prominent varicose veins, you are more likely to develop them over time.

Additional causes of varicose and spider veins in your legs include obesity and occupations and hobbies that require extensive standing or sitting, as this can restrict blood flow.

How Can You Reduce the Appearance of Varicose and Spider Veins?

While there are multiple treatments to get rid of varicose and spider veins such as laser therapy, radiofrequency ablation, and surgery to remove or close the veins, these options can be incredibly expensive, painful, and invasive.

Many vegan parents choose to raise their young children on a vegan diet until they are old enough to make their own dietary decisions. This allows the parents to expose the children to plant-based meals and cruelty-free products that align with their personal beliefs, while also eliminating the time and energy it takes to prepare two separate meals — one plant-based and one not.

As the vegan movement has grown in popularity over the past few decades, more people have started speculating whether or not eliminating all animal products from a child’s diet impacts their development.

It’s no secret that individuals consuming a vegan diet are more likely to experience vitamin and mineral deficiencies as their food options are more limited. If these deficiencies go unnoticed or unresolved, they can have serious consequences, especially for young children.

This is why it’s crucial for vegan parents to monitor the most important vitamins for vegan kids to ensure their children are getting the proper nutrients from their diet.

Here are some of the most important vitamins for vegan kids.

Protein

One of the most essential micronutrients in a child’s diet is protein. Protein contains compounds called amino acids that contribute to the development of bones, muscles, tissues, and organs. Protein is also largely responsible for producing enzymes and hormones. Without sufficient protein, vegan children are more likely to experience stunted growth, which can open the door to a variety of other health issues.

While there are many plant-based foods that contain protein like beans, lentils, and whole grains like quinoa, many vegan parents decide to sneak in extra protein through all-natural plant-based protein supplements to ensure their children are getting enough protein to sustain their growth.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is the building block of various bodily processes, including protein metabolism, brain and nervous system formation, and creating red blood cells. Individuals who are deficient in B12 are more prone to nervous system disorders, anemia, infertility, and other diseases affecting heart function.

Anyone can have low vitamin B12 levels based on their diet, lifestyle, and various other factors, but since the vitamin is only found naturally in animal products, vegans have a higher risk of deficiency. Vegans can try to reach adequate levels by consuming B12-fortified foods, but the best measurable way to ensure their intake is sufficient is usually by taking a trusted vitamin B12 supplement.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a crucial element in our bodies’ absorption and regulation of the calcium and phosphate we consume from our diet. This absorption process promotes the circulation of vitamin D in our bloodstream and is responsible for delivering other essential health benefits in many areas of the body, including strengthening bones and muscles, promoting a healthy immune system, and supporting heart health.

While vitamin D has been called the “sunshine vitamin” due to our ability to absorb the nutrient from sunlight through our skin, too much sun exposure can lead to its own health problems, and it is not a reliable way to determine if and when a person has absorbed adequate levels of the vitamin.

Because of this, many health specialists recommend that children, especially vegan children, take a vegan vitamin D supplement

Calcium

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, it is during childhood and adolescence that a person’s peak bone density is determined. This means that the nutrients we consume during our developmental years impact the strength of our bones for the rest of our lives.

So, how can vegan parents ensure their children are getting enough calcium from their diet?

Luckily, there are many plant-based milks, yogurts, and cereals that are fortified with calcium available on the market. Plants like certain types of nuts, leafy greens, and beans/lentils are also good sources of calcium for vegans.
